Jason sent you this message from Southwestern Ohio backyard
poultry Meetup group on Meetup:
"Springfield ordanance is as follows:
You can have any birds you want, given that you allow 100'
between your birds and any adjoining property line. Ergo,
unless you have a bit over an acre of land, you don't have
chickens...cleaver, no? I have not approached the city counsel
to have this changed, but at some point I may."
Nick, also from Southwestern Ohio backyard poultry Meetup group has the following to say about Miamisburg laws:
"Hi everyone I hope this you guys are had a great spring. I just had a meeting with the city of Miamisburg about our chickens and if we are going to be able to keep them or not. long story short chickens are not legal in the city limits. They however are thinking about makeing them legal because of all the calls and emails they have gotten. So I just applied for a special permit until this can go before city council July 11,2011. I need your help!!!! What can you do? First off Email City Council let them know why you like having backyard chickens maybe the benefits that they provide your you and or your family and send in a picture of your chickens with you or your family. Second if its not to much trouble for you come join me the night of the city council meeting. We need to show voting force even if you don't live in Miamisburg it shows this is a trend not just one guy wanting chickens. We know the green movement is here and with green you have chickens they go hand in hand. Here is email address elected@cityofmiamisburg.org elected@cityofmiamisburg.org Please don't wait to send in your email."

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you. Really this is very good information.
DeleteMiamisburg.
I have chickens in Springfield, Ohio. I own my home, live in a terrific neighborhood and unless I told them that I had chickens, none of my neighbors would ever know I had them. I am approaching the Commissioners in the next several weeks and I would like to know if anyone in Springfield would be interested in getting started in changing our ordinance to allow chickens on city lots. If my neighbor's dog can hike his leg and pee through to my yard, why can I not have chickens that give us free eggs and fertilizer? If my neighbor's cats can crap in my son's playpen, which was in the middle of my fenced-in yard while I was gardening, which the cat jumped over, how is that fair? This is clearly against code. Chickens for eggs are no more livestock than a vegetable garden is a farm.
ReplyDeleteIf you are in Springfield and want this changed, let's make it happen. I have already been in contact with Jim Bodenmiller, who recommended I approach the Commissioners with a request to change the ordinance. One funny thing to point out, if chickens are illegal in Springfield, then why even mention at all in the ordinance that it is illegal to dye chickens? Let's make this happen! Please write the Commissioners, one of them is a Master Gardener and perhaps we can convince her as well as Mayor Copeland. If you want change, let's organize. You can reach me at P.O. Box 2775, Springfield, Ohio 45501.
Were you able to change the ordinance? I would love to have chickens in our backyard and we also live in one of the nice neighborhoods in Springfield.
DeleteI wrote about this in the April post and at my blog.

I live in Dayton and just got a notice of a housing violation for my flock. I want to appeal, any advice out there ?

ReplyDeleteRod, are chickens technically legal yet in Dayton? What was the violation for? We have a backyard flock and are currently helping my sister fight a notice she just received in Huber Heights.
ReplyDeleteChickens & egg (meat & dairy) cause heart disease, accelerated aging and cancer cell division. If you really want to sustain yourself stop eating poisonous meat. Dying slowly in the USA is the backbone of our economy. Ignorance of nutrition is the fuel that fees the nonsense.
